Inscriptions include "LIBERTY, " "IN GOD WE TRUST, " and the year of mintage. The reverse side displays a design created by John Mercanti, featuring a heraldic bald eagle with a banner in its beak while holding an olive branch in one talon and a bundle of arrows in the other. Traditionally, American Eagles struck only at the West Point Mint, but this coin produced at Philadelphia facility, that was previously unknown. Philadelphia Silver American Eagles were sealed in monster boxes that said "West Point Mint, " making it difficult to identify where those coins were actually produced. When this information came to public, this series became one of the biggest surprises for the numismatic world and the lowest mintage in the 31-year history of the American Eagles.
